LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The United States Secretary of Education announced test scores are down nationwide ranging from middle school to high school students.
The national assessment of education progress found 12th graders had the lowest scores in more than 20 years. Eighth grade students also saw a huge drop in science skills.
CCSD shared a statement with FOX5 in response to the “nation’s report card”:
CCSD officials say Superintendent Jhone Ebert has laid out the “Core Four”, which are her academic priorities focusing on early literacy and middle school mathematics.
Experts believe increased screen time, a decline in reading longer-form writing and shorter attention spans may be factors as well.
The secretary of education says there is plenty of work to be done.
“If America is going to remain globally competitive, our children must be able to read proficiently by the 3rd grade and graduate equipped to solve complex problems. We owe it to them to do better.” said Linda McMahon, U.S. Secretary of Education.
