LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 has obtained the dispatch audio and video following the moment a Henderson Police Sergeant was run over by a man driving a stolen Jeep.
According to Henderson Police on Jan. 13 around noon an automated license plate reader spotted a stolen Jeep traveling east on Lake Mead Parkway.
Around 1 p.m. Sergeant Scott Alward located the Jeep near Boulder Highway and East Lake Mead Parkway. Sergeant Alward can be heard through the dispatch call identifying the vehicle and the driver.
“Jeep style vehicle in front of Panda Express, with a tire on the back, BM [black male] driver, pink sweatshirt,”
As Sergeant Alward approached the suspect, the driver identified as 43-year-old Jonathan Gaston reversed the vehicle attempting to flee the scene.
The officer explained to dispatch “He is trying to run, I have him blocked in,”
Another officer can be heard describing the direction Gaston was driving, “Vehicle just took out, headed into the Walmart parking lot,”
Police say when the Jeep came to a stop, Sergeant Alward was positioned in front of the vehicle when the driver accelerated toward the officer. Just before the vehicle hit the officer, Sergeant Alward fired his gun striking the suspect through the front windshield.
“Shots fired, I need medical bad. I have a massive laceration to my head.”

Officials report Gaston drove the Jeep directly into Sergeant Alward and dragged him across the plaza parking lot about 65 feet from where he was hit.
“The driver took off. The vehicle just 401’d [crashed] into the nearby shopping center.” The officer explained to dispatch.
“He’s on foot running,”
Moments later officers told dispatch Gaston had run inside a nearby Chase Bank, where he was then located with a gunshot wound to his right arm.
HPD says immediate aid was provided, Gaston was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and then booked into Clark County Detention Center.
Gaston faces five charges in connection with this shooting:
- Attempted murder of a police officer with a deadly weapon
- Battery with a deadly weapon resulting in SBH (substantial bodily harm)
- Resist public officer with a deadly weapon
- Duty to stop at the scene of an accident
- Buy/possess/receive stolen property
On Jan. 24 Gaston was indicted by a grand jury and now faces 37 felony charges. These include multiple credit card theft charges.
His trial is set to begin on July. 7.
