LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Nevada State Contractors Board partnered with the attorney general’s office to arrest a licensed contractor.
Jon Thomas Banning, owner of JTB Landscaping, was arrested with an outstanding felony arrest warrant issued by the Las Vegas Justice Court.
The warrant charges Banning with eight felony counts relating to multiple transactions involving fraud or deceit. It accused him of receiving money, property, rent or labor with false pretenses.
“Our Board appreciates the partnership and swift efforts of the Attorney General’s Office in locating and apprehending Mr. Banning who has demonstrated himself to be a contractor with little regard for the law and wellbeing of the members of our community,” said NSCB Executive Officer David Behar. “Our Board remains committed to advocating for the safety of seniors and other vulnerable populations and will actively pursue prosecution for contractors who willfully choose to harm homeowners across our communities.”
The case started from an NCSB investigation where multiple complaints from homeowners were filed. Many of them were seniors.
The complaints accuse the contractor of taking thousands of dollars as deposits on landscaping and pool projects and never starting or completing it.
In total, the victims lost more than $308,000.
The board says anyone looking to hire a contractor should look for the following red flags:
- Demands for large down payments or cash-only payments.
- Failure to put the terms of a project in writing.
- No contractor’s license number and/or contractor information does not match the NSCB’s website.
- Aggressive sales tactics and pushy ‘today-only’ pricing.
The NSCB accepts consumer complaints against licensed contractors up to four years from the date work was performed and up to two years when work is performed by a licensed contractor.
All complaints are opened and investigated to determine the validity of the allegations and identify options for remedy when applicable.
