LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — August 6, 1945, marked a significant milestone in world history. On this day, the U.S. detonated the first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan.
The bombing came years before the creation of the Nevada Test Site, but the state did play a role in the blast.
Crews stationed at the base in Wendover were trained in the loading of an atomic bomb — but weren’t told anything about the ordinance they were handling. The exercises continued until the final day when they loaded an atomic warhead onto a B-29 bound for Japan.
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed as many as 250,000 people and prompted Japan to surrender, ending the Second World War.
