LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — FOX5 is getting new answers from the Nevada National Guard about their upcoming mission with ICE and what exactly their role will be.
The Nevada National Guard will soon be sent to support ICE in what officials call a “clerical, administrative and logistical role only.”
FOX5 spoke with the Nevada National Guard public affairs officer Captain Emerson Marcus specifically asking if guardsmen have any interaction with detainees.
He explained there will be “no law enforcement duties, no interactions with detainees on that level as far as leaving outside of administrative work or clerical work. It’s going to be a lot of paper pushing.”
Out of the state’s 4,500 guardsmen, 35 are expected to volunteer for the mission.
FOX5 asked Emerson, “how many guardsmen have volunteered for this mission so far?”
He said, “at this point, we don’t know who who’s actually going to be activated for this, we are still working with Department of Homeland Security.”
Emerson added they are still so early in the process that they haven’t even reached out to volunteers yet. When asked about whether guard members would be involved at all in tactical missions specifically behind the scenes, Emerson said there would be “no tactical missions that the guard will be involved with on this mission.”
Emerson said 32% of the Nevada National Guard identify as Hispanic, with some even coming from mixed status families. He added anecdotally, the mission is affecting families within the Nevada National Guard.
“The federal government wants this, and they asked for the governor’s help, support at this time through mid-November and the governor responded to support this request, and the guard stands ready to answer the call for our elected officials.”
FOX5 reached out to Governor Joe Lombardo’s office offering him a sit-down interview to talk about his plans for the Nevada National Guard they said, “not at this point.”
