LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) -Governor Joe Lombardo has activated sixty members of the National Guard. They will be on standby in Carson City and Las Vegas.

FOX5 spoke with the National Guard about the mission.

“This is purely a precautionary measure. If I was to say why the Governor did this, I think it would be because he’s thinking about the safety of Nevada residents. Just to be absolutely prepared for any type of emergency that may happen,” said Nevada National Guard Captain Emerson Marcus.

The captain says he has not heard about any threats of violence.

Unlike big events where guard members have been quite visible, Captain Emerson says don’t expect to see guard members at voting locations.

“In some instances in the past, especially for the New Year’s Eve mission on the Las Vegas Strip, we do have an active presence on the Strip. But on this mission, we will not have an active presence in the public,” said Captain Marcus.

Captain Marcus says guard members will be stationed at armories.

“They will stand by. They will wait if called, if needed,” he said.

Governor Lombardo says as a first responder he knows the importance of being prepared. He also says the decision reflects his commitment to safety and preparedness on Election Day.
