LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Police around the valley say they’re taking the next step in traffic enforcement by creating an inter-agency initiative to crack down on unsafe driving.
“No matter the jurisdiction, no matter where you’re driving in our city, there are officers out there and if you are driving improperly, you will be stopped,” LVMPD Lt. Cody Fulwiler told FOX5 Monday morning.
Lt. Fulwiler echoed the strong message from other Metro officers and agencies around Southern Nevada, as one of the biggest stories in the valley this year continues to be people dying on our roads.
“Today we’re launching a coordinated valley-wide traffic enforcement initiative to address these growing challenges,” Deputy LVMPD Chief Jose Hernandez announced in front of the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
Metro, along with Henderson and North Las Vegas Police, plus Nevada Highway Patrol and State Police, are teaming up to ramp up enforcement.
“Each jurisdiction has their own critical intersections, critical locations,” Lt. Fulwiler explained. “Those jurisdictions are going to work together and we’re going to decide where we’re going to go out and do some joint enforcement.”
To do so, the agencies will gather data from the past and present to figure out which spots need the most attention.
“These operations will involve data-driven deployments of resources targeting locations with a history for repeat crashes and dangerous driver behavior,” Hernandez said.
It won’t just be drivers under the microscope. This joint effort will also look for pedestrians trying to cross where they’re not supposed to.
“We’re looking at vehicles, motorcycles, bicyclists, pedestrians – those vulnerable road users,” Lt. Fulwiler said.
Hernandez says you’ll notice a difference.
“The community will see increased highly-visible enforcement across major roadways, neighborhoods and high-collision areas,” he promised.
There have been 153 deaths on roads in Metro’s jurisdiction this year, with 199 in all five agencies’ jurisdictions put together.
