LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A disaster relief volunteer from the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada has been deployed to Texas as the region braces for a severe winter storm that could affect thousands of residents, according to organization officials.

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada said the volunteer is among the organization’s efforts across the country, mobilizing to provide emergency shelter, food, and aid to communities preparing for dangerous cold conditions and potential power disruptions.

“Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do,” said Rachel Flanigan, executive director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Their willingness to leave home and help strangers in times of crisis is what makes our organization so powerful, and we’re proud to be able to support communities far beyond our own.”

Volunteer deployment

According to the release, Linda Gong has been deployed to Houston as a sheltering volunteer. Gong will assist residents with access to a safe and warm place to sleep as temperatures drop and winter weather moves into the area.

The Red Cross is working with local and state partners to assess needs and expand services as conditions evolve. Volunteers are coordinating with emergency management officials to support community preparedness and provide assistance to vulnerable populations, officials said.

Winter weather threat

The Red Cross reports that the National Weather Service has warned that Houston and surrounding areas may experience dangerously low temperatures, icy conditions, and potential power disruptions.

Red Cross volunteers are opening and operating warming shelters where residents can access food, shelter, and emotional support. Additional shelter locations and resources will be activated as needed, particularly for older adults and people experiencing homelessness who face heightened risks from cold weather, the Red Cross release detailed.
