LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents is set to vote next month on a proposal that would raise tuition and fees for college students across the state, university officials said Friday.

Members discussed the plan at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Friday. If approved, tuition rates for students at UNLV and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) would rise 12 percent by 2028, which is about $1,200 a year. Lower-division community college students would face a 9 percent increase, officials said.

Student body representatives from UNLV, UNR and other campuses pressed regents with questions about the proposal. One student spoke about her father, who came to the U.S. as a teenager, and described how his education at UNLV changed his opportunities.

Officials said the increases are intended to close a budget shortfall largely tied to planned faculty pay raises. They said the adjustments are necessary to keep Nevada colleges competitive, retain faculty and preserve high-quality instruction.

The Board of Regents will take a formal vote on the measure next month.
