LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Nevada State Police trooper shot a driver early Sunday morning during a traffic stop on I-15 after the driver pointed a firearm at the officer, according to police.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:48 a.m. on the southbound I-15 on-ramp at St. Rose Parkway after troopers initiated a traffic stop for failure to stop at a red light, Nevada State Police said.
During contact with the driver, troopers observed indicators of suspected impaired driving and requested the driver exit the vehicle, police said. The driver refused to cooperate or follow the trooper’s directions.
A trooper observed the driver pointing a firearm at them and discharged their firearm into the driver’s side window, police said.
The driver was immediately taken into custody without further incident and transported to an area hospital, then booked into the Clark County Detention Center upon release from the hospital.
No serious injuries were reported for the driver or the troopers, police said.
An investigation into the shooting, led by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, is ongoing.
