LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Nevada State Police’s Nevada Threat Analysis Center (NTAC) is warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the “State of Nevada, Department of Safety & Homeland Security.”

On Thursday, March 26, NTAC received reports of messages using alarming language such as “FINAL COURT-ORDERED MANDATORY COLLECTION NOTICE.”

The texts falsely claim a recipient’s traffic violation account is delinquent, in default, and that all compliance deadlines have expired.

Authorities say the messages are designed to pressure recipients into scanning a fraudulent QR code.

Scanning it could prompt victims to enter sensitive personal or financial information, pay fake fees, or inadvertently download malware to their device.

Nevada State Police emphasized that it does not send text messages demanding payment, threatening legal action, or directing people to resolve alleged violations through QR codes.

What to do if you receive one

  • Do not scan the QR code or click any links
  • Do not provide personal or financial information
  • Delete the message immediately

Anyone with additional information or concerns is encouraged to contact NTAC at [email protected].
