LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Some military veterans in Southern Nevada are helping to fill the need for more poll workers this election season, volunteering at polling sites and continuing their service to our country.

“It’s not a spectator sport. Voting I feel like is the bare minimum,” said Stefano Saltalamacchia, an Army veteran and now-poll worker. “I’ve never been a pole worker before, so I thought it would be a unique experience because this is the system as it stands now, and I wanted the ability to participate in the fullest capacity.”

Vet the Vote held a pep rally Sunday at Leatherneck Club to thank local veterans and their families for volunteering as poll workers this election season — another important way to serve our country.

“That desire and drive to serve doesn’t just stop when we take off the uniform, or our loved one does. So, so many of us are looking for that next thing that purpose that’s bigger than us, that we can be a part of in service to our country and our fellow countrymen and women,” said Ben Keiser, Executive Chairman of the We the Veterans Foundation

Vet the Vote is a national campaign encouraging veterans and military family members to sign up as poll workers. They’ve recruited more than 163,000 veteran volunteers this election cycle alone, including more than 3,000 in Nevada.

“Vet the Vote came to Nevada to help us fill a shortage of poll workers for this upcoming election cycle,” said Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar. “We’re grateful they understand how important our democracy is in Nevada, and the fact that veterans have stepped up to protect our fundamental right to vote.”

“I want to be there so that I can tell my nieces when they grow up or maybe my future kids that yeah I participated in this election,” said Saltalamacchia.
