LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Department of Social Services has confirmed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients have received a portion of their benefits.
According to a Nov. 5 release, about $29 million in SNAP benefits were sent to eligible customers.
Officials report more than 196,000 eligible households will receive between none and 50% of their benefit amount, which was issued following new guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“Getting benefits onto EBT cards quickly is essential for Nevadans receiving SNAP,” said Robert Thompson, Nevada Division of Social Services (DSS) Administrator. “While some projected it could take days or even weeks to adjust computer systems and recalculate hundreds of thousands of benefit amounts, our team — with the full support of Governor Lombardo and his cabinet — planned for this possibility and began the work before the federal government issued new guidance.”
In a statement issued by the president for the Retail Association of Nevada (RAN), he thanked officials who explored state-level solutions to ensure families in need are fed.
“While the federal government’s decision to partially fund the program provides short-term relief, Nevada families still face uncertainty about the remainder of November’s benefits,” said Bryan Wachter, President of RAN.
Officials say benefits are typically issued over the first 10 days of the month, but due to the halt in benefits, they were all transferred on Wednesday.
