LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – At a welcome event for new educators in the Clark County School District, FOX5 talked with several to learn what brought them to the Las Vegas Valley to teach.

“Last year, I found myself delivering food on the weekends, working extra jobs, teaching AP virtually. I just got sick of that hustle bustle kind of life,” Libi Kittredge said Thursday morning. “So I looked at other options.”

Kittredge says coming to CCSD came down to making enough money to stick with just one job.

“I’ll have an increase of $20,000 to $30,000,” she said. “That is what prompted the move here to Nevada.”

CCSD has made competitive pay for tenured teachers a priority in recent years, with more than 1,400 new teachers joining this upcoming school year. That’s more than 100 greater than last year’s new additions.

“We always want to stay competitive, and obviously the adjustment to our salary schedule has been beneficial to our efforts,” Jason Ginoza, CCSD’s Assistant Human Resources Officer, told FOX5.

For some teachers, this is one of several moves they’ve made in their careers.

“Been to the east coast, Canada, and then Arizona, and from Arizona to here, so hopefully this can be our final journey,” Julieta and Rolando Santos, who will be teaching at the same CCSD school this year, said.

On top of higher pay, they say the Las Vegas Valley lifestyle was also attractive.

“We would like to be in a broader community,” Julieta Santos said. “More opportunities for us for growth.”

“We’ve heard a lot of amazing things here in Nevada,” her husband Rolando added. “Particularly in CCSD.”
