LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A new facility will help mitigate some flooding issues in the east Las Vegas Valley.

The Jim McGoughey Detention Basin at the base of Frenchmen Mountain was completed. Clark County Commission Chairman Tick Segerblom and members of the Clark County Regional Flood Control District gathered Thursday to mark its completion.

Construction of the $21.3 million detention basin near Owens and Los Feliz began in August 2024. It can hold 80 acres of water and will flow into Lake Mead.

Commissioner Tick Segerblom said it will make life easier when the rain comes.

“In the summer, particularly, we have huge flash floods. And when those floods come, they destroy a lot of houses. They create problems with traffic. They get all kinds of dirt around. And then we actually had deaths. So the fact that we can stop that in the future is going to make life better for everybody,” Segerblom said.

Officials said the Regional Flood Control District’s master plan is 75 percent complete.
