LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — With new laws forthcoming regarding e-bikes, officials from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department addressed the changes, specifications regarding which vehicles can do what, and the importance of proper licensing, equipment and compliance with safety laws.
LVMPD officials shared a flowchart that categorizes each vehicle into a group based on its characteristics.
E-Bicycles
E-Bicycles have no more than 750 watts of power and a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour. Minors must wear a helmet while riding an e-bike.
Moped
A moped must have a 50 cubic centimeter engine or 150 watts of power or less. It has no more than three wheels, a maximum speed of 30 mph, and requires a driver’s license and the driver to be at least 16 years old. It also requires a Nevada Department of Transportation-approved helmet and registration.
E-Scooter
An e-scooter is defined as having handlebars, weighing 100 pounds or less, and a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour.
Motorcycle
A motorcycle requires its rider to be at least 16 years old and to wear a DOT-approved helmet. Its rider must have insurance, have the vehicle registered, and possess a motorcycle endorsement.
“Mainly keep in mind that the changes coming Oct. 1st are geared towards electric bicycles and electric scooters,” said LVMPD officer Robert Wicks. “The laws that are already in place for motorcycles are staying the same on this.”
Wicks said a problem on the streets of Las Vegas is young people riding vehicles that are classified as motorcycles.
“You wouldn’t let your kids hop behind the [wheel] of a Tesla just because it’s an electric car,” Wicks said. “I’m not quite sure why all the parents out there are allowing their kids to hop on these and start riding around on the streets.”
Police said the first step for Las Vegans is education, and knowing that the wearing of safety equipment is paramount in its importance.
The changes are set to take effect on Oct. 1.
