LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Thousands of Nevadans now face the prospect of finding work or risk losing their food assistance as new federal regulations are in effect.
Under the new federal rules, able-bodied adults without dependents must log at least 20 hours of work per week to remain eligible for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Recipients can also maintain their benefits by participating in approved job readiness or volunteer programs as an alternative to traditional employment.
Eliminated Exemptions
The new guidelines strip away previous exemptions that had protected vulnerable populations, including:
- Veterans
- People experiencing homelessness
- Young people aging out of foster care
Impact on Nevada
State officials report that nearly 45,000 people in Nevada have already received notices warning that their benefits are at risk under the new requirements.
