LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A new exhibit opened at the Clark County Government Center, showcasing stories of individuals who helped Jewish refugees during the Holocaust.
The installation, called “The Choices of Man Through the Lens of the Holocaust,” was unveiled at a reception celebrating its debut. The Nevada Center for Humanity’s Nevada Holocaust Museum curated the display.
“Most of the people that were rescuers and upstanders were ordinary people, oftentimes peasant farmers, who took food off their own plates,” said Heidi Straus, president of the organization. “During wartime, rations and a bounty on their head if they were caught by neighbors and still hid Jews in the floorboards or behind a false wall or in the barn,” she added.
“When we teach about acts of rescue, those that weren’t bystanders, but instead those that became upstanders. They made a choice to rescue and save the lives of one or more Jews during the war,” Straus explained.
The exhibit highlights individuals from 55 countries that helped Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. It shares personal stories and photos, focusing on the theme of standing up against discrimination and injustice.
It’s now open to the public. The organization said the exhibit will remain at the government center until they can find a permanent home for the artifacts.
