LAS VEGAS — A crosswalk where a high school senior was struck and killed in Las Vegas will receive safety enhancements, city officials said Wednesday.
In a news release, City officials said new safety measures would be implemented on roads near Arbor View High School in northwest Las Vegas, where high school senior McKenzie Scott was killed in an alleged DUI crash in May.
The changes, officials said, are the result of a traffic study and will include overhead pedestrian-activated flashers, new signage, and repainted crosswalks in the area of Buffalo Drive between Grand Teton and Whispering Sands drives. The study also noted that all the traffic safety devices were functioning properly at the time of the crash.
“We wish that safety enhancements could prevent tragedies on our roadways, but the difference-maker is that everyone in the community must be responsible and make good decisions while using the streets,” said Shelley Berkley, mayor of Las Vegas. “My heart goes out to McKenzie’s family and friends and the entire Arbor View family for this senseless and tragic loss.”
Scott was killed days before graduation. Keenan Jackson, 37, faces charges of DUI resulting in death, reckless driving and driving without a valid driver’s license in connection with the crash.
