LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has approved a new policy banning transgender athletes from high school sports.
“We implement this comprehensive policy statement, which reflects our dedication to the evolving landscape of interscholastic sports,” said Timothy Jackson, Executive Director of the NIAA. “By refining our approach to governance and prioritizing student-athletes, we are taking important steps to uphold fairness and opportunity for all participants.”
The new policy will revise the NIAA’s student eligibility and participation policy, which would clarify that athletes would be “divided on the basis of sex.”
The policy notes, “The term ‘sex’ is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of ‘gender identity’.”
Lt. Governor Stavros Anthony also praised the NIAA’s decision Thursday, “Today’s vote sends a clear message: Nevada values and protects opportunities for female athletes. Girls deserve a level playing field, and this action helps ensure they can compete, grow, and succeed without having to compromise safety or fairness.”
He continued, “Let me be clear, there is a place for everyone in sports. But no one is entitled to a position that takes an opportunity away from someone else. Today’s vote is a win for girls across Nevada.”
