LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In his first visit to Nevada after taking office for his second term, President Donald Trump touted a campaign promise to eliminate taxes on tips.

“Your tips will be 100% yours,” he proclaimed Saturday afternoon to a cheering crowd inside Circa on Fremont Street.

FOX5 spoke with a few members of the crowd about the proposed policy.

“It affects me, my family, friends,” Las Vegas resident Jordan Crosby said. “I definitely think it’s a beautiful thing to be able to maximize how much you’re making.”

“We have a casino in Bishop, California where I’m from, and they’ve all talked about what this means to them,” Joanne Parsons said of her employees.

It’s a popular proposal — even Kamala Harris adopted the policy after Trump initially floated it during last year’s campaign.

While discussing the plan, Trump joked about the inconsistency of tip tax enforcement.

“You haven’t been reporting them for the last ten years,” he chuckled.

That joke resonated with people in attendance.

“There’s a lot of behind the scenes behind the tips that most of the general public doesn’t realize,” Christina Clark, who lives in Las Vegas, said after the speech.

“I work at the Wynn and Encore Hotel and Casino,” Antonio Gazza said. “People leave tips on the card, and it’s not okay because they go after those tips hard.”

It’s a poorly kept secret that much of a worker’s tips, especially cash, go unreported.

“This morning, when I went out for breakfast, I asked the young lady, I said, ‘Would you prefer cash or do you want me to put it on my credit card?’” Parsons recalled. “And she said, ‘Oh, would you give me cash?’”

The proposal is in Congress as a Senate bill, proposed by Ted Cruz of Texas.

President Trump will be in Miami on Sunday for a GOP retreat at one of his properties.
