NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Cheyenne High School celebrated a milestone Wednesday night with its first-ever mariachi concert.
The mariachi program, launched this fall, is the result of a $60,000 grant from the City of North Las Vegas. The funds provided musical instruments to help bring the program to life.
The students had just one month to learn their instruments before the concert, but their hard work and dedication shone through during the performance.
For junior Asusena Palacios Colmunares, the class has been a source of joy.
“Even if I had a bad day that class always bring up the energy nothing ever goes wrong in that class,” Colmunares said.
Director of the mariachi program, Ms. Elizabeth Mendez, said the program has already made a difference in students’ lives, noting that it has inspired students to come to school and stay engaged.
“They always tell me, miss I only come to school just for this class,” Ms. Mendez said.“
Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown attended the concert and praised the program for its celebration of Hispanic culture and ability to unite the community.
“To celebrate Hispanic culture through mariachi program I know it tells their story we all can learn from them and the heritage and history of this great music form,” said Mayor Goynes-Brown.
Cheyenne High School says the program is already boosting student achievement and increasing parent engagement.
