LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – NV Energy is accused of overcharging more than 80,000 customers, totaling at least $17 million.

According to a filing from the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, an investigation revealed the power company has been overcharging customers since 2001.

The filing says NV Energy’s misclassified residential rate resulted in 60,000 customers being overcharged an excess of $17 million.

PUCN said NV Energy overcharges about 20,000 unidentified “multi-family accounts” for an undisclosed amount.

FOX5 reached out to the public utility company for a response to the filing. They say the impacted customers started issuing refunds to customers overcharged.

“NV Energy is aware of the request from the regulatory operations staff of the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada to review the recent refunds NV Energy provided to customers NV Energy will respond appropriately through the regulatory process. NV Energy discovered a number of customers who were charged the wrong rate for their property type, informed the Public Utilities Commission staff of the issue and has notified those customers and started issuing refunds to customers that were overcharged. NV Energy has not sought repayment from those customers that were undercharged.

The commission is calling for a formal investigation into NV Energy’s billing practices.
