LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The gunman who opened fire at a Manhattan office building Monday, killing four people before taking his own life, legally purchased the rifle used in the attack, according to an attorney for the Las Vegas casino supervisor he bought it from.

The New York Police Department identified the shooter as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, a former employee in the surveillance department at Horseshoe Las Vegas.

A senior law enforcement official said Tamura legally acquired the AR-15-style rifle from his supervisor, identified as Rick Ackley. The weapon was transferred on Oct. 2, 2024. Chris Rasmussen, Ackley’s attorney, said the transfer was lawful under both federal and Nevada gun laws.

Tamura drove cross-country to New York City, where he entered an office building housing the National Football League’s headquarters, fatally shooting four people before dying by suicide, according to various reports.

Police are investigating whether Tamura believed he had a brain condition linked to contact sports and harbored resentment toward the NFL.

Since the shooting details have trickled in about the gunman. CNN reported a Crimestoppers tip in June from a licensed firearms dealer claimed Tamura was seen at a Las Vegas gun show. The dealer said he remembered Tamura after he saw his photo on the news, adding that he had attempted to purchase an aftermarket trigger assembly for an M4-style rifle at a gun show in June 2025 but initially returned it for a refund to buy ammunition. He reportedly returned the next day and repurchased the item.

Tamura resided at the Paradise Royale Apartments near Tropicana Avenue and Paradise Road, according to sources. NYPD officers have traveled to Las Vegas as part of the investigation. Las Vegas police are also looking into a second apartment potentially connected to Tamura, though details remain limited.

Authorities found a handgun and a rifle in Tamura’s possession. Photos of ammunition boxes and gun parts discovered in his vehicle were provided to FOX5 by its New York affiliate.
