OfferUp exchange aids police in Henderson construction site theft case, report says

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The arrest report of a man accused of stealing from newly-built homes in Henderson detailed the investigation into the thefts and his criminal history in California.

According to the report, the property unit of the Henderson Police Department had been investigating multiple burglaries in which someone had either taken or attempted to take appliances from newly built homes on the east side of Henderson. Investigators recovered multiple fingerprints belonging to Alex Eduardo Hernandez on a large stainless steel refrigerator that was stuck in a doorway leading to a garage.

During another burglary, a white Tesla Model S was captured on camera. Investigators deemed it the suspect’s vehicle, the report said. Surveillance video showed the vehicle, which had a tow hitch, entering a garage and leaving about an hour and a half later. In that incident, a dryer was stolen.

Other noted thefts included microwaves, refrigerators, range stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and more than a dozen tankless water heaters. The report said burglaries in the area usually have a delay in reporting due to the number of new homes being built in Henderson, which can make it difficult for investigators to determine the exact date and time of the crime.

Law enforcement officials checked Hernandez’s record and determined he had a California driver’s license and a criminal history. According to the report, Hernandez had previously been arrested on charges related to kidnapping, carjacking, receiving stolen property, possession of burglary tools, possessing, manufacturing or selling a dangerous weapon, impersonating another, vehicle theft, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, failure to appear on a felony charge, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, burglary, DUI, DUI resulting in bodily injury, and petty theft, among others.

Additionally, Hernandez had three active warrants for stolen property and grand theft, and second-degree burglary issued from Orange County, California, and one for speeding from Las Vegas Justice Court.

Police checked camera databases for clips of the vehicle and found 11 instances between Jan. 12 and Jan. 17 in and around the area of Galleria and Cadence Vista drives in Henderson. Investigators also found video of the Tesla, with the rear tow hitch, in front of Hernandez’s house.

An officer began communicating with Hernandez while posing as a past customer on OfferUp, an app that connects buyers and sellers in their local area. According to the report, the officer asked Hernandez if he had a dryer for sale. Hernandez responded that he did have a brand-new unit available and sent a picture of it. Hernandez told the officer he had “lots” for sale. An employee of the construction company confirmed that the unit in the photo was the one that was stolen.

Location data from Hernandez’s phone showed it in close proximity to the homes that had been burglarized, the report stated. Additionally, police obtained surveillance video showing Hernandez unloading a new appliance.

Hernandez was arrested on Aug. 7, just after 4:30 p.m. Police said they found five garage door openers, several identification cards, debit and credit cards belonging to others, and multiple sets of keys that investigators said appeared to be consistent with storage unit locks, along with a GM car key and a Home Depot unit number card.

After contacting the owner of one of the debit cards—who chose to press charges for Hernandez’s possession of the card—Hernandez was booked into the Henderson Detention Center. He faces two counts of residential burglary, attempted theft, three counts of possessing a credit or debit card without the cardholder’s consent, possession of burglary tools, and theft.
