LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A project to honor the victims of the 1 October shooting, due for completion in time for the ten-year remembrance, has raised $4 million of its $45 million goal, according to officials from the Vegas Strong Fund.

The memorial is planned to be built on the site of the concert, land donated for the memorial by MGM Resorts. Kelly McMahill, the treasurer for the nonprofit, said the project is a significant undertaking.

“We have a long way to go, and we’re looking at lots of possibilities,” McMahill said. “It would be wonderful if other sports teams, if local philanthropists could find it in their hearts to be part of this project, because it’s going to be special and it’s going to be such an incredible representation of what our city’s become, which is a community with a real heart.”

Meant to be a tribute to the 58 victims, survivors and heroes of the 2017 Route 91 Music Festival shooting in Las Vegas, the “Forever One Memorial” is personal for McMahill, who was a captain for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on the night of October 1, 2017.

“I responded to the incident, in the aftermath of what occurred, she said. “I ended up being the captain in charge of the criminal investigation into the incident, and then was tapped by then Sheriff Joe Lombardo to write the after-action report.”

McMahill said while it’s unlikely that one person will be able to raise the remaining funds, every donation helps.

“Not everybody out there has $1 million to donate,” McMahill said. “If you have $5, if you have $10, if you’re a little kid watching this right now and you want to be part of helping, you can hit that donate button and give whatever it is that you are able to give.”

More information on the Forever One Memorial is available on its website.
