LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A driver is dead and another is in custody after a Sunday night crash in west Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department determined the crash involved two vehicles and happened at 10:38 p.m. on Buffalo Drive and Peacock Avenue.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2017 Honda Accord was traveling south on Buffalo at a high speed, approaching a sweeping right-hand turn. At the same time, a black Hyundai Sonata was traveling north on Buffalo.

The crash occurred when the Honda failed to negotiate the turn and crossed the center median, entering the Hyundai’s path of travel. The two vehicles collided head-on, redirecting the Hyundai onto a roadside barrier.

Both drivers were hospitalized for their injuries, though the driver of the Hyundai – identified as a 78-year-old – would later be pronounced dead.

The driver of the Hyundai – identified as 23-year-old Juan De Leon – displayed signs of impairment and was booked in absentia for DUI resulting in death.

“The Hyundai driver’s death marks the 57th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for the year 2024,” LVMPD noted in a release. “The collision remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Collision Investigation Section.”
