LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It is a story FOX5 broke Wednesday night, No Love for Bridal Spectacular. The new owner of a long-time Las Vegas bridal show is accused of taking money from wedding vendors and then cancelling the show last minute. FOX’s Kim Passoth followed up with the original owner who is likely the biggest victim of all and is devastated by what’s happened.
“Bridal and all the wedding vendors in this town are part of our lives,” Laura Covington explained. Countless brides-to-be and wedding vendors in the Vegas Valley have connected over the year at the Bridal Spectacular. Covington shared photos from 2009 when the event was held at Cashman Field.
“My mom was a florist, and my father was a DJ and in the 80s, they knew how hard it was to get business and reach brides for their wedding businesses here in Las Vegas. So, she started the Bridal Spectacular in 1991 when I was three years old and our first show was a huge success,” Covington fondly recalled. After three decades of successful events, her mom, Debra Hanson, sold the show in September.
“My mom found out that she had breast cancer and so, it just seemed like it was the right time,” Convington stated. After failing to find someone they knew to sell the business to, the family then shared their event was up for sale on a group for wedding show owners.
“Bridal Show Producers International, which is a group of amazing bridal show producers that we have been a part of since the 90s…and Karin popped up and she’s like, ‘Oh, I just bought the Portland Bridal Show and I’m interested,’” Covington recounted. Karin Webster promised to pay $50,000 in a payment plan and did send a quarter of the money. Webster then took over the event collecting money from vendors before cancelling this month’s show.
“After the cancellation, she actually asked my mom, ‘Can you give me the money back?’… Obviously, that was not going to happen,” Convington revealed. Covington hopes to get the Bridal Spectacular brand back to sell to someone legitimate to carry on the legacy.
As FOX5 reported last night, this did not just happen in Vegas. It also happened with a bridal show in Oregon. Webster is also accused of taking over a bridal show, taking deposits from vendors, cancelling last minute and disappearing.
FOX5 has tried calling, texting, and emailing Webster. We have not heard back.
The BBB says they are aware of Webster and the cancelled shows in both Oregon and Nevada. They ask anyone who lost money to contact them and the state AG’s office.
