LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As the man accused of hitting and killing high school senior McKenzie Scott while driving under the influence awaits his fate in court, a strong push for change continues in the north valley community around Arbor View High School.
“Right now, we could use crossing guards,” Krista Holloway, founder of Walk Safely LV, told FOX5 Wednesday morning as she and a crowd of a couple dozen parents and students demonstrated outside the north valley high school. “For the long run, we’re going to need a light that’s going to stop the traffic, stop the kids.
FOX5 asked the Clark County School District if it plans to add more crossing guards to its schools after a Change.org petition was posted online. Its response pointed instead to the community. It was that community that stepped in Wednesday morning when they sensed danger.
As the group stood next to the memorial built outside the school for Scott, a driver came close to hitting a student crossing the street.
“I couldn’t just stand here and watch kids play frogger to try to get to school on time,” Ashley Brewer, whose son was hit by a car weeks ago, said after watching the near-miss. “So I stepped up and I went out and I was the crossing guard for today… My mama bear kicked in. I’d rather it be me than them.”
Brewer agrees with Holloway that the solution to the problem requires more than just crossing guards.
“Eventually, we’d love to get some crossing mechanism where they can push a button and it turns to a red light and it gives ample time for everyone to cross without impatient cars,” she said.
“I think it’s like the flashing pedestrian lights where they have to press a button,” fellow parent Nicole Davis echoed.
Davis also invoked comments made Tuesday by Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, who called for more punishment for DUI offenders.
“Just my personal opinion – a life for a life,” she said. “Harsher sentences just need to happen.”
Keenan Jackson, who’s facing charges in Scott’s death, is due back in court May 27.
