Later that same day at about 4:50 p.m., Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety deputies were dispatched to a boating collision on the Colorado River near Topock Gorge, north of Lake Havasu.

Deputies responded and found the boat near the California shoreline as fire crews treated two people. One was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was flown to a hospital, where they later died.

According to investigators, the 25-foot boat was speeding north when it lost control, hit the Arizona rock shoreline, and came to rest in reeds along the California side.

The victims were later identified as Noah Welch, 33, and James Rutherford Jr., 53, both from California. The crash remains under investigation.
