LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A North Las Vegas officer shot and killed a man wielding 2 knives after allegedly hitting his mother.
NLVPD responded to to the 3100 block of Emmons Avenue just before 2 p.m., near Lake Mead Boulevard and Pecos Road following reports of a domestic disturbance.
Officials say the suspect identified as 34-year-old Sebastian Gomez.
Newly released NLVPD body worn camera shows when the first officer arrived on scene the suspect ignored multiple commands. Moments later Gomez can be seen charging at another officer before he was shot.
The officers can be heard giving commands prior to the shots fired, one said, “Don’t come at me with that knife, you’re going to be shot.”
No officers or any community members were injured during the incident.
According to records Gomez was facing various charges before the shooting took place. Gomez was also facing unlawful use of an emergency phone number, resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon, and domestic battery.
NLVPD also report officers responded to various calls involving Gomez, including domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a protected person, resisting arrest, and interfering with an officer attempting to do their job.
Police say these offenses and additional reports of Gomez threatening neighbors is consistent with the suspect reportedly being off his medication.
“In one previous call he allegedly threatened to kill a neighbor and their family and in another officers responded after he was reportedly armed and not compliant during a mental episode.” said, NLVPD Officer Roberto Vaquera.
Officer Saul Macias has been with the department since 2018 and Julian Castro since 2022. Both officer have been placed on paid-administrative leave due to the pending outcome of the investigation.
Officials report this was the third officer-involved shooting in North Las Vegas this year so far.
