LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – They are on the front lines of public health in our community, but Thursday, some Southern Nevada Health District workers were on the streets staging a protest for higher pay and better benefits.
The union-represented workers say they are coping with staffing shortages. They say they are struggling to make ends meet against rising inflation.
They say the wage gap is making it harder to keep and recruit new health district workers. Many say things have only gotten worse since the pandemic. A time when many worked in challenging conditions.
“A lot of us worked through COVID,” said Sandy Luckett, an administrative secretary with SNHD. “You had people out in the streets giving shots, taking tests, testing people. We had all kinds of sites and people just worked through it at their own risk.”
The protestors also say they are asked to pay too much for their healthcare benefits. Some say they are considering a second job to cover expenses.
FOX5 reached out to the health district or a response on today’s protest. SNHD says it is working with staff to reach a fair and equitable agreement.
