LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —A newly formed Public Records Task Force held its first meeting Thursday, bringing together representatives from the broadcast industry and government members to examine challenges surrounding public records access.

Task force membership and focus

The group includes members who represent the broadcast industry, among them attorneys, as well as government representatives. The task force is focused on addressing difficulties faced by both journalists seeking public records and government agencies responding to those requests.

What members are saying

Task Force Chair Colleen McCarty, a lawyer who has done legal work with FOX5, said the group has been assigned to examine known challenges and identify areas for improvement.

“And it’s a challenge for both sides. And I think everyone recognizes that. So this committee has been tasked with looking at some of the challenges that we know are opportunities perhaps to improve things,” McCarty said. “So that both the journalists and the government can manage public records requests and be transparent and open for the public.”

No date has been set for the task force’s next meeting.
