Pushback over bridge rules after suspect sentenced in deadly attack on Las Vegas strip

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As the man accused of stabbing an off-duty officer on a Las Vegas Strip pedestrian bridge faces life in prison, FOX5 is looking into the pedestrian bridge rules that came after the tragedy.

Tuesday afternoon, yellow signs posted on the pedestrian bridges near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo read “Pedestrian Flow Zone: No stopping, standing or activity causing another to stop.”

FOX5 crews observed a steady flow of people across the bridges, with only the occasional stop for photos.

This comes after new rules were enacted at the start of 2024, preventing anybody from stopping, standing or blocking the path on pedestrian bridges over the strip, except if they are taking a photo.

At the time, Under Sheriff Andrew Walsh spoke to Clark County Commissioners in support of the new rules- saying the bridges were hot spots for crime, and packed bridges created visibility challenges for officers.

But, the new rules were also met with challengers. Particularly from street performers who used the bridges to perform on. The ACLU who claimed the ordinance’s exception for selfie takers was “unconstitutionally vague.”

According to court records, the lawsuit is ongoing, no trial date has been set.
