LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada has deployed volunteers to the Las Vegas Convention Center to assist those seeking shelter.

According to officials, following severe windstorms Tuesday, about 1,500 homes in Clark County remain without power.

The Las Vegas Convention Center is offering emergency shelter for those still without electricity. Officials say, about 50 residents are utilizing the resources offered.

“We are committed to supporting our community during this time of need,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “The shelter is open to anyone impacted by the power outages, and we will stay as long as necessary to provide relief and assistance.”

These resources are being offered at the convention center’s South Hall, Room S2,with parking available in the Platinum Lot off Joe W. Brown Drive.

They say the shelter is accommodating small animals with the help of Clark County Animal Protection Services. Those with unique needs are recommended to contact Animal Protection Services at 702-455-7710.

Power Outage Safety Tips:

  • Stay away from downed power lines: Keep at least 35 feet away and report hazards to 911.
  • Avoid electrical shock in flood areas: Do not enter flooded areas or use electrical equipment that may have been submerged.
  • Discard unsafe food: If food has been at 40°F or warmer, especially dairy and meat, throw it out. Check with your provider about refrigerated medicines.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning: Use generators, camp stoves and charcoal grills outdoors only, in well-ventilated areas at least 20 feet away from windows.
