LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Social media can provide lots of great gift ideas this holiday season, but the Better Business Bureau warns to look, but don’t click.

Rhonda Mettler with the Southern Nevada BBB said the organization receives complaints from consumers about social media ad scams all the time.

Shoppers purchase an item but never get it, or they received a lackluster product that was not advertised.

Mettler said there are a number of red flags shoppers can look for so they don’t become another victim, including the product’s price. A lower price that normal could be a sign of a counterfeit product.

Con artists will often turn off the post’s comments to keep their previous victims from warning others. Mettler recommends a simple Google search before purchasing anything found on social media.

“Just do an online search so if there are other individuals that have done business with this company on social media you’re going to hear about it,” Mettler added. “Scammed or not, people are going to throw it out there.”

Mettler also advised shoppers to go to the website themselves instead of clicking on the ad since scammers often make imposter ads look just like one from a business you know and trust.
