GOLDEN VALLEY, AZ (AZFamily) — Years after human remains were discovered in northwest Arizona, authorities connected the findings to a man reported missing nearly three decades ago.

On Oct. 22, 2000, a group of teenagers discovered human remains in a desert area near Burro Road and Verde Drive in Golden Valley, a community west of Kingman. Dental records were examined at the time, but there was no match.

With the help of modern-day advanced DNA technology, authorities recently identified the remains as Dennis Craig Edmondson, who was reported missing two years before in February 1998.

Using advanced DNA technology decades later, authorities identified the remains as Dennis Craig Edmondson, who was reported missing in February 1998.(Mohave County Sheriff’s Office)

The case was cold for 22 years when, in January 2022, Mohave County’s Special Investigations Unit began digging into the case. Updated flyers were sent out, asking the community for information or tips.

Authorities say new DNA samples were obtained from the Edmondson family and sent to NamUs, a national resource center in Texas that specializes in unidentified and missing persons cases.

Mohave County investigators were told that the DNA samples from the remains were degraded, making it difficult to compare them with other DNA samples. Since electronic comparison couldn’t be completed, investigators had to do a manual comparison.

Then on Feb. 24, 2026, the sheriff’s office received confirmation that the human remains were a match to the DNA samples provided by Edmondson’s family, confirming they were in fact Edmondson.

While one mystery of the identity is solved, authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Edmondson’s death. Detectives believe he did not die of natural causes.

Anyone with information about Edmondson or his death is asked to contact Mohave County special unit investigators at 928-753-0753 ext. 4408 and reference DR #98-03894.
