LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A new set of renderings for the Chinatown corridor in Las Vegas show options for change to revamp the booming area.
FOX5 has continued to follow the Inspiring Spring Mountain project. For months, hundreds of locals, tourists, business owners and nearby residents weighed in on proposed solutions to crime, congestion, parking and traffic in Chinatown.
New renderings show options to boost pedestrian safety and walkability in the area: wider sidewalks with trees, street art, streetlamp upgrades and other aesthetic improvements.

Starting July 1, Chinatown officially becomes a “redevelopment area.”
Some property tax dollars can be diverted to fund improvements to streets, sidewalks and businesses. Those tax dollars can fund potential improvements seen in renderings, Jones said.
“From day one when we talked to people in the community, there were a lot of things obviously heard: we want to make sure that this is a safe corridor and it’s a walkable corridor, and that it’s a greener corridor,” said Commissioner Justin Jones of the Clark County Commission. “Spring Mountain was really an industrial corridor, and then when Chinatown Plaza came in more than 25 years ago, it really started a transformation for that area– but it was never designed as a walkable pedestrian corridor. We want to really take advantage of the fact that there are so many people who love to come to Chinatown, love to come down to the restaurants and the shops in in the Chinatown area. Make it the corridor it should have been.”
These renderings simply show ideas; businesses must weigh in on the concepts, first, Jones said. Project leaders will be speaking with local businesses and community members for the next phase of input.
A final report is forthcoming this fall.
Some notable changes coming to the area, according to Jones:
- A crosswalk from Chinatown Plaza to Shanghai Plaza: construction will start this fall and hopefully be completed by Lunar New Year in 2026.
- Pedestrian street cameras: as part of upgrades to safety for tourists and visitors, more cameras will be added along sidewalks of Spring Mountain Road.
- Utility upgrades: aging electric lines and water lines will be improved for businesses. Power lines above ground could also be moved underground, Jones said.
- Repaving of Spring Mountain: Work begins early next year on Spring Mountain west of Decatur Road. Decisions must be made to the Chinatown area before repaving commences from the I-15 to Decatur.
