LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A man faces an open murder charge after telling family he killed his girlfriend, an arrest report says.

The deadly shooting happened morning of Dec. 22. Markeem Benson’s father called North Las Vegas Police to tell them his son wanted to turn himself in for murder.

Benson told police he had a fight with his girlfriend and there was a struggle over a gun and she died.

When officers arrived, Benson let them enter his apartment. Police would find a Black woman with gunshot wounds.

Police say she was dead at the scene. According to an arrest report, the victim is 33 years old and had at least two gunshot wounds.

Investigation revealed through the wounds that Benson was on top of the victim as she laid on the floor.

Benson would make multiple phone calls. First, police say he called his father at 10:02 a.m. that morning.

“I killed her, I think I killed her,” he said. He would also call his brother and say he did “something bad.”

The victim’s family spoke with police. The night before the shooting, police learned they were at a party.

The family said Benson noticed a woman who came which made his girlfriend feel jealous. The two discussed it and later went back to the party. The family didn’t note much arguing.

Benson and his girlfriend left the party around 12 a.m. According to the family, the two have been together for four months.

Police learned Benson has a previous criminal record, such as robbery, home invasion and domestic-violence offenses.

He is due in court Thursday at North Las Vegas Justice Court at 8:30 a.m. for an arraignment.
