LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 has learned more about the former assistant principal facing multiple charges related to sexual misconduct and kidnapping.
According to the arrest report, on Feb 25, a Clark County School District employee reported Hearley Smith, 54, after they saw a suspicious incident with a student in his office.
The employee allegedly tried to enter Smith’s office when he attempted to quickly block the door, then pretended to sneeze while fixing his pants, and then saw the student fixing their pants as well.
The 16-year-old student told police they would spending a lot of time in Smith’s office specifically while the student had assignments due in class.
Smith gave the student a ride home after they missed the schools late bus a few times without parents consent, the report says.
The arrest report detailed a visit to the students home made by Smith around Christmas to give them a gift. The gift was a beanie, scarf, wallet, and socks.
Detectives discovered Smith would pay secretaries to make corrections to the attendance. Smith reportedly changed or altered the students attendance about 131 times for approximately 6 months.
On Monday, March 3, Smith resigned from his position at Canyon Springs High School.
The student admittedly told police that they began a relationship with Smith in exchange for money. The student knew that they could extort Smith if “things ever got bad,”.
The student said inappropriate relations occurred more than 10 times while they were in Smith’s office, but was too ashamed to speak out, said the report.
The student received nearly $500 from Smith.
Last week CCSD Police partnered with LVMPD and arrested Smith at Harry Reid Airport while he was sitting at a restaurant.
Smith is set to appear court on March 13.
