LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – An arrest report obtained by FOX5 is revealing what led up to a deadly I-15 shooting this past weekend.

North Las Vegas Police Department has identified Joseph De Luna, 28, as the shooter. He is facing an open murder charge and was booked in the North Las Vegas Correctional Center following the shooting.

On Sunday, NLVPD officers responded to the I-15, just north of the Cheyenne Avenue off-ramp, after Nevada State Police notified them of a homicide. Arriving officers found a man dead inside a pickup truck parked on the shoulder.

Officers also located De Luna, who remained at the scene after calling 911 to report the shooting. De Luna would tell dispatchers that he “was threatened by someone” and “emptied his clip into him.”

During a search of his person, troopers located a bag containing a suspicious white substance on De Luna, believed to be cocaine.

While in custody, De Luna told officers the two were riding in his truck after a night hanging out on Fremont Street, though he said they did not know each other well.

De Luna claimed the victim had been talking about working together during the drive, but mentioned that “if he didn’t, he had the capability of hurting De Luna and his family.”

De Luna told officers he assumed the victim was talking about dealing drugs, and pulled the truck over before parking. He stated that he reached for his weapon as the victim stated, “Why did you do that for? Now I’m going to hurt you for real.”

The report notes that the victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, though De Luna admitted he didn’t know if the victim had a weapon.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

De Luca is set to make his initial appearance in court on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
