LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Four Henderson police officers saved an eight-year-old girl, who was home alone, and two dogs in March when a fire broke out at an apartment at The Marlow apartments on Whitney Ranch Drive.

FOX5 recently obtained an incident report, and something caught our eye regarding the young girl inside.

“She said she was afraid to exit the apartment during the fire,” read the incident report.

There are numerous articles that indicate kids can panic and become confused during fires and not leave a home or apartment. Some kids will hide in closets or under a bed thinking those are safe spaces, when they are not. The Clark County Fire Department says crews are trained to search in closets and under beds for kids during active fires. Officials also say they hold fire exit drills for families.

The incident report says the girl’s mother said she was out walking and jogging at the time of the fire. She later told officials another person was supposed to be watching the eight-year-old girl but left.

Firefighters determined the cause of the fire to be an unattended candle in the area of a “shrine.” The report indicated the mother said she does light candles for an altar in her bedroom, but said she only lights them on certain days and didn’t light any that morning. The report indicated damage was estimated at around $65,000.
