LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas Desert Research Institute is helping study the aftereffects of the Los Angeles fires earlier this year.
The fires destroyed about 16,000 structures.
“We look at the soils physical aspects of how water goes into soil,” said Ahdee Zeidman, one of the researchers who travelled to the area to collect samples.
Zeidman and her colleagues scooped up samples from burned areas and also areas that were not touched by the fires.
“We wanted a comparison of the soils,” she added.
The researchers are not looking at what compounds or potentially toxic chemicals may have seeped into the soil, but rather how soil is absorbing water.
Their work will help LA County produce a plan to mitigate the effects of the fire before the rebuilding begins.
