LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Residents in an aging Las Vegas public housing complex will get all moving expenses paid for, help in the search for new housing, and a right to return to a brand-new complex in the Historic Westside.
FOX5 told you about the Marble Manor construction project from the Southern Nevada Housing Authority, all made possible by $50 million in federal grants. There are plans for a mixed-income, 600-unit housing complex with retail space.
FOX5 has covered Marble Manor residents’ concerns for years, as the 80-year complex has fallen into disrepair and needs plenty of upgrades.
FOX5 met with a group of residents who are excited to leave and move to upgraded apartments without spending a dime; many hope to return to the restored neighborhood.
“They were very good, moving me and everything. I didn’t have to do anything or pay anything out of pocket. And they found me a real nice place to go to,” said 75-year-old John Kaczmarek II. “I just want to come back here though,” he said.
The complex has 235 units. Each resident is assigned a SNRHA worker to help them find a new place. Residents will get wraparound services throughout the entire moving process, including the period when they are eligible to return.
Original residents have the right to return to the brand-new facility and will get to move in, first.
“It’s time to move on. I’m ready to go,” said another resident named Sister Vera, who wants to move sooner than planned.
The move-outs and demolitions will be done in phases.
The first group of 48 families has until May to move. Construction will begin in June.
The entire project will take eight years to complete.
According to SNRHA officials, a job plus facility will open up at the AD Guy center, helping residents explore job and career options.
