LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A bizarre robbery in Summerlin as thieves set off a fire extinguisher as a distraction as they stole from customers at a nail salon.
And we’re hearing about another similar incident just down the street in the Costco parking lot.
FOX5 spoke with a robbery victim, who was too shaken up to recall what had happened on camera. That’s how we learned the thieves at this nail salon took off with expensive handbags, phones, cash and cards.
At this point it’s unclear if the two incidents are related, but one victim describes the similarities.
“Out of nowhere, a big smoke dust bomb explodes in my car and it’s full of this white-green dust. Starts burning my eyes. Starts burning my skin.”
This victim, who does not want to be named, says she noticed something weird in the Costco parking lot just before 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, telling FOX5 the drivers of vehicles boxed her into her spot.
She says she had the windows down in her fancy car, and then, “I’m with my friend in the car, so she immediately tells me please roll the windows up they’re trying to rob us.”
She says nothing was stolen, because she rolled up the windows and stepped on the gas.
The victim immediately reported the incident to police.
“The cops showed up. The fire department helped us get cleaned off. They took some samples, took some pictures.”
But shortly after, the victim says that wasn’t that last time she’d hear from police that day.
“Fifteen minutes later, the same police officer that helped us out called me and told me that there was another incident. She let us know that upon reviewing the tapes that it was a fire extinguisher that was used because it happened at the nail salon at Rio Nails. I guess the suspects came in and they they shot off the fire extinguisher in there and stole people’s property.”
Metro Police confirm two masked males set off a fire extinguisher into the nail salon as a distraction.
They went in and stole property from two customers before fleeing.
Metro has not linked the two incidents, but a map shows they happened just over two and a half miles apart.
That would-be robbery victim who has lived in the area her entire life has this message for her neighbors.
“You guys should be really careful, and ladies should be driving with their windows up. You can be in the safest part of town. You can be in Summerlin right in front of Costco and be a direct target. So, just be careful out there.”
The nail salon owners tell FOX5 they lost a lot of customers Monday, but they’ve been cleaning up the fire extinguisher mess for hours, and say they plan to be open Tuesday.
Metro Police are still looking for the robbery suspects.
