LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In honor of Black History Month a running group in Las Vegas is promoting health and wellness with the joy of running.

The newly established Black Men Run group in Las Vegas partnered with the girls chapter in the valley in an effort to bring people together.

“Black men is a nationally known black men run group,” said Kyle Broyard. “we are in the process of starting a chapter in the Las Vegas area.”

While the focus is on fitness, it isn’t the only goal of the group.

“The overall promotion of unity, brotherhood though running and jogging.” added Broyard.

“I want everyone to feel welcome. i want this to be a safe space for everybody with the purpose for black men in mind but i want everyone to come have fun.” said Michael Rivarde.

He explained those who come check it out shouldn’t be worried they aren’t the fastest runner.

“It’s really just to get people to come and be active together, feel a sense of safety & security in that kind of blanket of people that look like you and are in the same space. it’s very important that we’re all in it together. we wanna meet you whether you’re running, walking or you wanna get outside and meet some new people” shared Rivarde.

While the men’s chapter maybe just starting in Las Vegas, the local branch of “Black Girls Run” has been around for more than a decade.

Member Barbara Hollins talked about what inspired the formation of the first chapter in Atlanta back in 2009.

“Disproportionately black women and black men suffer from obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, that’s very prevalent in our community, it was started to bring awareness to the health issues we face” said Barbara Hollins.

For Mandrell Lucas this black history month is particularly special not only because of the opportunity to celebrate with the new local men’s chapter, but also because of what her group was able to make happen.

“We here at black girls run Las Vegas will be sending 16 girls to Alabama next month to actually celebrate the civil rights movement, the 51-mile race that are ancestors actually walked.” shared Mandrell Lucas.

Barbara Hollins says the red rock running club has been a great help and not just during black history month.

“they’ve been just so supportive of our organization and everyone’s health, getting out being in the community, it’s really great” added Hollins.
