LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada said their red kettle was stolen in Southwest Las Vegas the past weekend.
The nonprofit said it happened Saturday at 4:51 p.m. in front of the Hobby Lobby on Tropicana and Ft. Apache.
Fortunately, the bell ringer was not harmed. She told store management and Metro police that she saw a white male teenager on a skateboard around the area before the incident.
Camera footage from the Hobby Lobby shows that the teen managed to grab the locked kettle stand in its entirety and took off on the skateboard by the side of the building.
Store management and the kettle volunteer would find the kettle with the lock cut off and the kettle empty.
“The bell ringing season is The Salvation Army’s biggest fundraising event of the year which allows us the capability to provide for families in need all year long. We set a goal for what we work towards with our community of bell ringing volunteers as to how to reach that goal, so when something like this happens it makes reaching that goal much more difficult” said Envoy Jennifer Jones, who oversees this holidays Red Kettle campaign in Las Vegas.
The red kettle started in San Francisco in 1891 to provide holiday dinners to those in need.
