Scammers look to cash in on back-to-school shopping season

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Back-to-school shopping season is in full swing, and so are scammers looking to take your money.

These days, many people go online to find the best deals on everything from school supplies to uniforms, shoes, and clothing. Cybercriminals know that, because they’ve done their homework. They’ve created fake sites offering deep discounts on the things you need most.

These sites typically offer super low prices with free shipping and fast delivery. It’ll appear like you got a great deal, until your order fails to arrive. By then, the site is gone, and so are the scammers, with your money and your financial information. And that leaves you vulnerable to identity theft.

To avoid these types of scams, only shop with online retailers you know and trust. If you’re tempted to try a new site, check reviews and complaints before placing an order. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be suspicious of impossibly deep discounts.

Always use a credit card for online purchases. They offer you the highest level of fraud protection. And, if you do get ripped off, be sure to report it to the FBI or the Federal Trade Commission.
