LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Christmas is only 5 days away. Gift cards make a great last minute gift option. Buyers need to check the card for tampering before purchase, though to make sure scammers haven’t already used it.
The Federal Trade Commission is reminding shoppers of this scam this holiday season. Con artists will scratch the back of the card or peel the protective sticker to expose the card numbers and pin and use them and then the gift care recipient is able to.
The FTC advises prospective buyers to check cards first. If the numbers or pin is exposed, let a store employee know. The agency recommends buyers to change stores. These thieves often tamper with batches of gift cards. The FTC also recommends buying gift cards with credit cards if possible. They often offer more fraud protections than debit cards.
