LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – With all of the destruction caused by the recent hurricanes and tornadoes, generous people may want to lend a hand to families in need. Scammers hope to take advantage of that generosity.

Before giving money ever, it’s important to do some research. The Federal Trade Commission recommends that prospective donators give to organizations they know and trust.

Websites like Charity Watch and Charity Navigator break down how much of the donated funds go toward the organization’s mission versus running the organization.

According to experts, a good rule of thumb is to donate to an organization where at least 75 percent of donations go to their mission.

The FTC advises that donors ignore those who pressure anyone to donate and immediately give money.

It’s also a red flag if anyone asks for donations in cryptocurrency or gift cards. Be cautious donating to anyone asking for money on crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe or Kickstarter.

A scammer can pose as someone in need.

Plus, crowdfunding website donations are not tax deductive.

If the organization passes the test, donate using a credit card as they offer and provide better fraud protection than debit cards.
